The game goes until 21, and if there is 20-20, the game goes until one person wins by 2 points, or if they end up having 29-29, the person who gets 30 first is the winner. This point system goes for all types of badminton.

Badminton Training Tips – Racket Hand Backcourt Footwork

Friday, 10. December 2010

Have you ever struggled to return a shot if the shuttle was hit toward the backcourt area? Most of the time, it is tiring, if not difficult, to return a shot targeted at the backcourt, especially if you are positioned near the net, or if the shuttle moves at a high speed. It can be frustrating if this happens to you, and sometimes it will leave you feeling helpless and discouraged, thinking: “how can I return such a shot?”

One of the ways to return a shot to the backcourt is to get into position quickly. For a right handed player receiving a shot to the right backcourt area, the first step is to turn the body in such a way that the torso faces toward the right side of the court and to make a small step with the right foot so that the right leg is positioned toward the area where the shuttle is anticipated to land. After this initial step, the left foot crosses the back/front of the right foot and the whole body begins to move toward the anticipated landing area.

Then, the right foot takes one more step. At this point, depending on where the shuttle is, the player can already hit the shuttle, or, make a smash or jump smash. If the player chooses to already hit the shuttle, the toe should be pointed away from the center of the court (which is the returning position) to enable the player to return quickly. If the player will follow a smashing process instead, the right foot should end up in front of the body pointing toward the center with the left foot behind and slightly stretched, again to enable the player to return quickly.

One of the most important parts of this process is the very first turn. If you do this part correctly, it will be easier for the rest of the process to follow. Also remember that while the process is described as a series of steps, the entire movement should be smooth and continuous.

This type of footwork can be modified to fit the situation. One alternative will be to jump early with the left foot, instead of taking one more step with the right foot. Jumping and hitting the shuttle high is preferred since with this stroke you can make an attacking move, like a smash or a drop. Keep in mind that it is always better to hit the shuttle high, and that the main point of good footwork is to get to the shuttle as quickly as possible to do this.

Where Does Badminton Come From?

Monday, 27. September 2010

Badminton is popular the world over, but particularly so in Asia. A wealth of disinformation seems to exist as to where the sport actually comes from, so I did a little research and thought I might try to set things straight. It’s actually quite a fascinating story.

Many say that the English invented Badminton, but we can actually trace it back further to around 500BC in Ancient China. There was a game called Ti Jian Zi, which involved a ball with feathers – similar to modern shuttlecock – but no rackets were used. We also know that by the time Christ was supposedly born, a game called Battledore and Shuttlecock was being played in China, Japan and Greece. The game bears a little more resemblance to today’s Badminton, but was in fact simply a paddle and shuttlecock, the idea of game being to hit the shuttlecock back and forth the most times.

By the 16th century, badminton had evolved into a children’s game, then by the 17th century upper class people over Europe had become quite fond of the game too. It was known by now under the french name of “jeu de volant” though.

Meanwhile in India a game called Poona was developing which closely resembled the modern day sport. The British officers stationed in India were drawn to the game and learnt the rules, taking them back to England. The game was therefore introduced to the nobles and royal society by the Duke of Beauford at his estate in Gloucestershire, England.

The estate was known as Badminton House. While playtesting the game, the nobles would string a length of rope or make a partition of sorts between the two players, and each would try to knock the shuttlecock away from their area. Soon the first ‘badminton club” was formed, which literally wrote the rulebook to the game that we still follow today.

The game exploded, and in 1899, the first ever national tournament was played. In 1934 the International badminton association was formed, initially with members from England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Denmark, Holland, Canada, New Zealand and France. India joined in 1936, and more and more championships and international tournaments were created. In the 1970s the sport were passionately pursued by the Asians, particularly Chinese women. Asian teams, especially Chinese, continue to dominate the sport to this day.

Badminton finally became an award Olympic sport in the 1992 Barcelona events.

Top Basic Badminton Skills You Should Learn

Friday, 13. August 2010

The key to master the game of badminton is to strengthen the very basics of the game.

How well you can improve your badminton skills depends on how familiar you are with the basic skills. Have you ever wondered why badminton is so popular in Asia and Europe, but not in US and Australia? Or why do the top class players come from Asia and Europe?

Let me share my thoughts with you.

In Asia, badminton is a game where families (especially fathers) bring their kids to badminton courts on weekends. Dad will teach their kids the very basic skills in badminton. Since young, kids would have picked up the basic techniques. When they grow up, they’ll find their group of friends to play badminton. With a solid badminton background, these kids explore further skills in badminton and start to develop new advanced techniques. Badminton is not only a national sport to some Asian countries; it is also an inherited culture where families and friends maintain relationships.

My point here is, you will only need to learn basic badminton skills at the beginning. Once you have mastered these basics, you won’t need to learn advanced techniques. You will naturally develop them! Executing strong smashes, performing quality deceptions, or diving to defend a smash… You’ll find badminton exciting when you are able to perform these techniques! Learn the correct basics in badminton and practise them. When you possess strong basic skills, you will eventually develop advanced techniques by yourself.

The most important basic badminton skills you should learn are:

Gripping technique: The correct way of gripping a badminton racquet enables you to transfer more power into your badminton strokes.

Basic badminton stroke (full arm swing): When you have mastered the basic badminton swing motion, you will be able to use it to perform a badminton clear, drop shot, and smash.

Footwork: Badminton is a game of speed. Effective and organised footwork plays an important role in enabling you to move faster around the badminton court. It’s simple! Just learn, practise, and master these 3 basics and you will find yourself exploring new advanced techniques by yourself.

A few examples of advanced badminton techniques are:

1. Fast attacks (maximum wrist action)
2. Attacking clear
3. Net kill
4. Deception

However, I recommend you master the basics first before trying these new skills. Badminton basics are the most important techniques in the game and the key to master the game is to master the basics first. Pick these skills up and you’ll be well on your way to better game performance!

Top 7 Tips for Badminton Players to Improve Performance

Sunday, 1. August 2010

There are certain factors that affect a badminton player’s performance. However, there are a few things you could do to avoid bad performances during badminton games.

1. Sufficient Rest

Get enough rest. It’s essential in helping you deliver peak performance during your badminton games. It’s quite impossible to concentrate when you’re feeling drowsy and tired.

Unlike other sports, concentration and reflex action is very important in badminton – the shuttlecock is capable of flying at 300 km/h! You will need quick reflex to retrieve your opponent’s shots.

Ensure you have at least 8 hours of sleep every night in order to deliver your best performance on the court.

2. Stay Hydrated – before, during and after your sessions

Water is vital to the everyday functions of a human body. Lack of water makes you dehydrated. A mild dehydration could make you lethargic, lose concentration and might also cause a mild headache.

Make sure you drink around 8 glasses of water every day. Besides these 8 glasses, make sure you also drink more during exercise.

3. Have a Meal Before Your Game

I can’t play badminton well when I’m hungry. What about you? You need energy to move around the badminton court. The only way you’re getting energy is from the food you consume.

When your body has all the energy it needs to burn, you’ll be able to move and strike faster, delivering all you can, physically. However, make sure you eat your meal around 90 minutes before you play to allow time for digestion. If you are feeling lack of energy in the middle of your games, you could always have energy bars or sports drinks to power you up.

4. Quit bad habits

If you’re serious about badminton and if you want to perform at your peak, you should quit smoking and drinking.

Smoking in general is harmful to your lungs. In terms of sports, it affects your fitness level dramatically. If you smoke, you might experience having less stamina compared to non-smokers. Drinking on the other hand affects your reflexes.

Social drinkers will probably not experience the effects of alcohol whereas hardcore drinkers will be greatly affected. If your reflex ability is slow, you’re not going to be able to retrieve a high speed shot.

5. Stretching

After warm up, do some stretching for about 15-20 minutes. Before training or during tournaments, national badminton players do stretching exercises for about 15-20 minutes on average.

They understand that stretching not only reduces the risk of injuries, it also helps loosen your muscle fibres so that you can move faster and stretch further during your badminton sessions.

6. Right Equipment

Many badminton shops may seem to try very hard to rip you off by selling you those high priced badminton equipment and apparel. The fact is sometimes, they are not. Using the right equipment will increase your performance to a certain extent as well as prevent potential injuries.

For example, wearing badminton shoes is necessary. Badminton is a sport where you’ll need to move extremely fast. Besides, badminton footwork involves you breaking and reversing your momentum.

If you engage in extreme badminton play without the right pair of shoes, you might find yourself having knee or ankle injuries!

7. Racket That Suits Your Style of Play

A badminton racket is not only for hitting the shuttle. Choosing the correct badminton racket will increase your badminton performance. There are no good or bad badminton rackets in the market. Most badminton rackets are decent.

You should know how to choose the racket that suits your style of play. A racket that reflects your strength will definitely increase your performance.
