How To Fix a Broken Skateboard Deck

Friday, 8. July 2011

There’s something about riding on a repaired skateboard that is inexplicable. It adds a new challenge, and brings a little fun back into the sport that has gotten so serious over the past few years.

If your skateboard has chipped, try saving the pieces and gluing them back on. If the pieces are nowhere to be found, or are completely unusable, then it’s time to get out the bondo. Bondo is great for repairing skateboard chips – you can just mix it then spread it over the cracks and chips and it will prevent them from getting worse. Any excess bondo can be sanded off and the board should ride just like new. It’s important to stop chips early on in the deck’s life, because if they are allowed to grow, eventually the whole tail or nose will wear down and the board will be irreparable.

If you’ve ever snapped a deck, you can fix it with some metal reinforcement sheets that they use for concrete. Have it cut to the size of the deck and then attach it to the deck using small screws, tape, epoxy, or whatever else you have. Make sure to line up the break on the deck as best you can so everything fits together properly. The metal is very light and will make boardslides easier, while keeping your graphic safe. If the board snaps again, just do the repair with a new sheet of metal.

Flatspots on wheels can be repaired without too much hassle. Take an electric drill and put the wheel on the end of it so that it will spin. You may have to wedge some cloth in between the wheel and the drill so that the wheel doesn’t get damaged. When you have the wheel on the end, turn on the drill and get the wheel spinning then place it on some sandpaper. This will grind the wheel down evenly and get rid of any flatspots. Try to keep even pressure on the wheel so that you don’t make them oblong.

If your bearings are slow, take them out of the wheel and remove the bearing shield. Clean them using some bearing cleaner, then add some bearing grease to them and they should ride like new. Some bearings just need to be replaced, but most of them can be cleaned and will work perfectly.

Fixing Trucks

If your trucks are worn down, try epoxying a small piece of rebar or pipe to them. This will keep the trucks from wearing down too far, and you should be able to grind with ease, depending on what you use for the repair.

If you lose an axle, or if the axle gets stripped, you’re basically out of luck. You can try epoxying the axle back into place, but there is really a lot of pressure on that part of your skateboard.

Conclusion

These repairs are really only temporary, so if you try any of them don’t expect them to last a lifetime. Be safe when working with power tools and high strength glues; you wouldn’t want to get hurt. The best thing to do if your skateboard really needs replacing is to buy yourself a few blank skateboard decks. These are cheaper than normal decks and last just as long. A blank skateboard deck is great for the money.

Baseball Coaching Tips – When to Put on a Defensive Shift

Tuesday, 5. July 2011

Baseball players have their “Normal” fielding positions which are designed to provide the greatest amount of area coverage in which one fielder will be able to reach and field a hit baseball. These positions are tried and true from tens of thousands of ball games.

However, these “Normal” positions are just that, Normal. There’s nothing set in stone as to not being able to vary the defensive set depending on the situation. Let’s look at a few of these situations which could dictate you moving your defense into a shift.

The very first and most used shift involves the corner infielders. Once again depending on the score, the manager must determine if his best bet is to put the odds in his favor as far as the third baseman or first baseman fielding the ball for an out, or increase his odds of not allowing an extra base hit.

With the score close, within 2 or 3 runs of each other, and the game being in the late innings, 6th and 7th of a 7 inning game, 8th and 9th of a 9 inning game, the coach will position his corner infielders very close to the base.

The reasoning for this is quite simple. A ball hit through the infield to the left side of the 3rd baseman or the right side of the first baseman, will result in a base hit, as the outfielder will easily be able to field the ground ball and get it back into the infield, holding the runner at first base.

However, a hard hit ground ball to the right of the third baseman or left of the first baseman, which gets passed the infielder, will most likely result in a double for the hitter, placing him in scoring position. The reason for this huge difference, is a ball hit like this will have a natural spin which will take the baseball in direction towards the foul line and away from the outfielder.

Instead of waiting for the ball to reach him, he will have to go and retrieve the ball which allows the runner more time to reach second base.

Another type of shift utilized is an Over Shift, in which either the second baseman is shifted to behind second base or slightly on the shortstop side of second, or the shortstop is shifted behind second or slightly to the right field side of the base.

The reason for utilizing this shift, as we will see, is actually two fold. This shift is implemented when there is a Pull hitter, with power at the bat. Some hitters are capable of pulling (hitting) any pitch, whether it be outside or not, into a specific field, most likely left or right field.

The extra infielder is placed on the side of the field the hitter will 99% hit the baseball, giving the defense an advantage of fielding the ball for an out instead of a base hit.

Secondly, the shift is also implemented in order to induce the hitter to hit the ball to the open side of the infield, which will be his Non Power side. The team in essence is saying “I’ll allow a free base hit in order to prevent a home run or extra base hit.”

In a pitcher’s duel, this shift and the results it produces, could have game winning or losing implications.

How to Grip Your Skateboard Perfectly

Wednesday, 29. June 2011

Firstly before doing this you will need the following tools; a round file, a Stanley razor blade and a Allen key (to pierce holes for the truck bolts). If you are under 18 please get adult supervision whilst doing this as you could cut yourself either on the grip or with the blade.

Ok so you have your grip tape and your board first off measure up the board with the grip and cut off any excess grip tape that over lays the end of your board and make sure that it is aligned straight. then you want to start peeling the grip slowly and pushing it against the skateboard making sure that you create no air bubbles, tapping it with your hand all the way along and making sure that it still stays straight when applying it. Once this is complete you should be left with a board that is gripped to ensure that you did not leave any air bubbles lay the backing sheet of the grip tape on top of your gripped skateboard and rub firmly with your hands to check and push out any left over air bubbles.

You will now need to take the round file and run it around the edge of your board to create a guideline for the razor blade I find doing this quickly but firmly with the file gives the best result. You will then need to take the Stanley razor blade and cut around the board at a slight inward and following the guideline you have created do the sides first and cut out the grip tape leaving the nose and tail until last as these can be the most difficult areas to cut around as they are round. Once this is done you will need to smoothly follow the round edge of the nose and tail, once this is complete you can grab the file again and run it around the edge to stop the grip tape from back peeling in the future. To stop you wearing down your shoes too fast when dealing with new grip, rub some waste grip tape onto the grip on your board lightly to life of the roughest parts of your grip tape.

Your board is now ready to set up and ride.

Training Tips to Become a Five Tool Baseball Player

Sunday, 26. June 2011

A five tool player is a baseball player that boasts impressive speed, is able to hit for average, hit for power, an excellent throwing arm, and additionally is going to be really good defensively. Chase Utley, David Wright, Carl Crawford, Evan Longoria, and Josh Hamilton unquestionably are good examples of current players that experts claim are adept or exceed at all of the 5 tools. Let’s look at every one of these one at a time.

Running Speed – This particular tool is just about the toughest to successfully improve in. It is actually doable to have a person to increase his speed, nevertheless his maximum is really primarily based upon the specific person himself. Speed is certainly tremendously significant when you consider that speed and agility happen to be put to use not merely in base running but in defense also. In addition to becoming much more physically fit, as a way to boost your speed it’s best to work on your form, efficiency of movement, as well as first-step quickness.

Arm Strength – Although, a number of people sometimes claim that arm strength is the least essential of the 5 tools, a player with a decent arm not only has a physical advantage over other players, but in addition a psychological one. For instance, if a baserunner witnesses that an outfielder possesses a spectacular arm, they’ll be less likely to attempt to take an extra base than they might have with an outfielder with just an average arm. The outfielder didn’t even have to make a throw, but he still won the battle. For you to improve in arm strength you must work on weight training (if you are physically mature enough) along with actively playing “long-toss.”

Hitting for Average – Hitting for average calls for the ability to hit to all fields and understand when to bunt. Being able to make contact often is critical. Hitting for average involves excellent decision-making skills and good pitch selection while at bat. Hitting for average is most likely one of the most significant tools because for you to score runs you need baserunners, and in order to have baserunners you need to get hits (or have especially good pitch selection and get walks.)

Hitting for Power – This is without a doubt the most envied tool of young players, but not necessarily the most crucial. The most noticeable advantage of power hitters are extra base hits and home runs. Power hitters also add a mental advantage of intimidation. Power hitters are frequently the most famous players on a team simply because much like fans, scouts love seeing a player hit the long ball. To be able to improve your power, a strength and conditioning system will be a must.

Fielding – Superb defensive skills are undoubtedly becoming more and more in demand simply because today’s players tend to be concentrating more on hitting for power. Terrific defensive players know how to position themselves against particular hitters, and be capable of utilizing a combination of their “soft” hands, agility, speed, and arm strength to make difficult plays look very simple. In order to improve your fielding, increasing your speed and arm strength is vital, as is getting out there on the field regularly to field ground balls and fly balls. It is a huge advantage if you’re able to play multiple positions.

As you can probably tell, 5 tool players are extremely rare. Sometimes, being really good at a certain tool can possibly lower your value in another. One example is, if you’re a big power hitter, you may be big and powerful, but it is probable that your speed could be lacking. Or, you might be really small and a remarkable defensive player with amazing speed, but can not hit for power on a regular basis. This is okay, and it is important to know yourself and your abilities and get better in the areas that you are lacking as well as perfect your strengths. You can still be a superb player without being a 5 tool player, nevertheless it definitely helps to work on all of these skills when selecting your training routines.

Volleyball Rotations

Monday, 20. June 2011

When playing indoor volleyball, the players always rotate clockwise. For those who haven’t played a lot of volleyball, there is often confusion as to when you rotate. Some people say you rotate every point, regardless of whether you win. This is not correct! You actually rotate when you win a point that the other team served. This means that if one of your team mates is serving the ball and you win the point, he or she gets to serve again and no rotation takes place. However, if you lose the point, the ball goes to the other team for their serve.

If you win the point from their serve then you rotate and a new person gets to serve. If you don’t win the point, then you stay in the same position until you do win. A libero is someone who takes the majority of the defence on a volleyball court, and they are swapped with another player (not subbed on though) and they come on after your team loses the serve. What this means is that the libero will take majority of the passes from the opponents serve, as that is their job.

If you have only just started volleyball, there is a good chance that the setter will change people, as you rotate around. However, in most games of volleyball where the players have been doing it for a long time, there will be one (usually, but there can be two) setter who is known as a back row setter. Basically they stand behind one of the outside hitters until the ball is served, and then they can run to front row. They still rotate as normal, but they have a few other little rules that they need to follow. Hitters often swap depending on what their strengths are as well. Rotations in volleyball are quite simple, once you have watched a few games.

Quick Ideas For a Better Bowling Game

Saturday, 18. June 2011

Anybody can master the techniques to take their bowling to an amazing level. There are a lot of different tips and techniques that you can put into practice to help you improve your score. Bowling is an entertaining hobby for every age, making it an ideal family pastime. The whole purpose is to have fun but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to improve your game by using various methods. Improving your score will only mean that you will have even more fun when you go out bowling again! A high score when the game ends is the ultimate satisfaction.

One thing new bowlers in particular should learn is to keep their bowling arm as relaxed as possible. Having too much tension when you bowl can both lower your score and make injuries more likely. It’s especially important that your thumb stay relaxed when you grip the ball. If your thumb doesn’t fit well into the thumb hole of your bowling ball you won’t have a proper grip. If your grip is too tense or not comfortable you’re likely to use more force than is necessary when you release the ball. This, in turn, causes you to lose control and your ball will not end up where you want it. You could send it flying right into the gutter!

The ideal way to get a straight throw on your ball is to hold it so your palm is facing up beneath the ball. Ideally, your grip on the ball should be as though you slid your hand beneath it and lifted it up from there. With your ball positioned, swing your arm and release the ball, making sure your arm is aimed toward the pins you want to knock down. You can help to stop your ball curving this way. However, if you want the ball to curve a little then you’ll need to tilt your hand slightly until your thumb is almost pointed toward you on the side. Using this technique can help you send your ball in a bit of an arc to reach a specific target. If you’ve noticed that your aim is sometimes off to the left or right, then you can use this curve to correct your aim and make it easier to hit the center pin more often.

You can gently and slightly twist your fingers during release, and this will help the ball gently curve away from the gutter. You can ‘steer’ your ball into the pin center by putting some ‘hook’ into it. That’s what you’re doing with the slight finger twist. Be careful not to put too much of a twist on your release or you will just send your ball hurtling toward the other lane gutter. Becoming an expert bowler involves much more than this, though. Always remember to keep at it. You can prevent frustration from affecting your scores just by relaxing and going with the flow. Consistent practice and keeping a positive mental approach will always do wonders for your game. Persistence pays off eventually.

Golf Tips On Putting

Thursday, 16. June 2011

Putting is such an important part of golf and yet most amateur golfers that do actually practice spend little or no time practicing their putting. Since putting accounts for around 35% of total shots per round for better golfers, you can seen why it’s so important to work on your putting if you want to lower your golf handicap. You know what they say, “Drive for show, Putt for the dough!” With this in mind, let’s go over some golf tips on putting that can help you lower your putts per round.

How you position yourself over a putt is very important. You want to make sure your eyes are directly over your intended putting line. This way you will see the exact path you want your ball to take and you will be able to visualize your putt rolling into the hole more easily. Ball and hand position should be just a hair towards your front foot. Keep your putter shaft in line with your left forearm (for righties). This position will allow your putter face to put a good roll on the ball.

Short putts can cause lots of tension in a golfers putting stroke. To help you have a more consistent putting stroke you’ll want to accelerate through the ball. Many times the putting backswing can become too long which causes you to decelerate through the ball resulting in inconsistent putting. To help cure this problem, when on the practice putting green place a 2nd ball about 6″ behind the ball you are putting. Stroke your putts without hitting the 2nd ball and you will be forced to have a shorter backswing with acceleration through the putt.

Once you are comfortable with a shorter backswing, here’s something you can do to help you focus in on the target. Place a coin on the practice green and practice putting to it. Using a smaller target will help you to focus your aim so that when you are putting during a round you will focus on the center of the cup and not just the whole cup. This drill can also be used to help you develop a better feel for longer putts.

These golf tips on putting can be very helpful to you if you want to lower your golf handicap. The next time you’re working on your game, make sure you devote equal time to putting as well as hitting your metal woods and irons. You’ll be happy you did because sinking more putts is the quickest way to lowering your handicap.

Soccer Continues To Rise In Popularity

Thursday, 16. June 2011

It has been long known that the U.S. is one of the few countries in the world where soccer is not considered the premier sport. Even considering the fact that some form of this game has been around for centuries, it has been slow to make its’ presence felt in the United States. That, however, may be changing as interest increases steadily for this sport that has for many years been the most popular sporting activity in many countries around the globe.

History tells us that the earliest versions of the game of soccer go back some 3,000 years and took place in Japan. Evidence suggests that the players used a rather rudimentary hair-filled leather ball which was obviously quite different from the well researched and developed, high luster, air filled soccer balls available today. We know that a game similar to what is played today was being played in the early nineteenth century in England. By 1904 there were teams from seven countries in Europe which organized under the title of Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). That organization still exists today and there are no fewer than 208 national teams that are part of this association.

Soccer isn’t just a sport or an exciting pastime but has also become a big business in the U.S. There are new stadiums being built to accommodate increasingly competent teams and the many thousands of spectators who come out to watch them play. Sponsors now seem much more eager to take on soccer teams than they have been in the past. In addition to that, the media has become more enamored with the sport of soccer and we witness a good deal more air time for this sport which makes it possible for millions of people to get involved in the excitement and competition from their own living rooms.

Although a new surge of interest has taken place for professional soccer, it is not the only level of the game that has seen such increased interest. Soccer has become a popular sport among high school athletes as well as intermediate school students and even those in the elementary grades. Stars of the sport have emerged and talented, well-known players have a sizable fan base who are happy to wear their idols numbered soccer jersey on as many occasions as possible. As soccer continues to infiltrate the sporting landscape of the United States, we will likely see more interest, more teams and more fans as time progresses.

Swimming Pool Safety Precautions – Play It Safe To Keep It Fun

Sunday, 12. June 2011

A swimming pool can be a dangerous place if you or others using it do not take care to follow some basic safety principals. Miss-use of it can easily result in serious injury or death. However by establishing a simple set of rules, and ensuring that people follow them (Especially small children) then your pool should be perfectly safe to use.

Simple pool safety tips: -

Never run near or around the edge of the pool, as splashing from the pool will result in wet concrete, which can cause you to slip and injure yourself.

Never take any real glasses or bottles anywhere near your pool and especially not into it. A broken glass in your swimming pool can result in severe injury. So only ever use pool safe plastic unbreakable glasses. They float, meaning they are doubly safe.

Never take any form of electrical appliance near your pool. Knocking your music system into your pool could quite literally kill everyone in it.

Always ensure people are aware of how deep your pool is. In general a lot of home swimming pools are not deep enough to dive into safely. Diving or bomb diving into the wrong end of it can result in a broken neck or back injury. This is a serious risk and one of the most common pool injuries.

Lastly when it comes to children and pools, no child of fourteen years or under should ever be allowed to use it unattended. In addition it is a very good idea if you have young children to have a fence around it with a lockable gate for when it is not in use.

These tips should keep your swimming pool safe.
